At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was mostly unadulterated, simple, and honest. His main role was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his wards imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to help but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and here the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is tough to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
